Gilroy has been on a mission to improve its downtown for some time now.
Former Mayor Al Pinheiro is leading a team of more than a dozen citizens to help in designing and constructing Gilroy’s first downtown Paseo. This shall be a beautiful pedestrian link between the main street of Monterey Boulevard, with access to parking behind the historic downtown shops. Business is certain to improve with the addition of this amenity to the downtown.
Karen Aitken and Associates, as part of the Paseo Design Group committee, has helped with the design of this Paseo. Several alternative designs have been considered before settling on a design that shall meet the City of Gilroy’s budget allocation.
Future phases of the Paseo construction include an interpretive display of artists’ murals, depicting Gilroy’s notable town founders, along with the City’s history of growth and development. Phase I of Paseo de Historica is anticipated to be open for Gilroy’s enjoyment in the Spring of 2014.
